Hatis Noit is a vocalist from the distant Shiretoko, Hokkaido in Japan. She got her start studying classical ballet, theater, gagaku (traditional court music and Japanese folk song. Hatis is now based out of Tokyo. In addition to performing as a solo artist, she is also the vocalist for the “funeral classical” Japanese band Mutyumu (Virgin Babylon Records).

Hatis’ solo releases to date include her voice-only debut album Universal Quiet (2014), and Illogical Dance (2015), a work on which she collaborated with long-time Björk collaborators Matmos. Her unique song-world offers transcendent vocal interpretations that at the same time deconstruct and recombine the DNA of Western classical, Japanese folk, whispering, and poetry reading, creating a soundscape so astounding that her show was sold out in a few days at Tokyo’s Koishikawa.

Her highly acclaimed for her versatile collaborations in art, fashion and theater, Hatis Noit has performed at large-scale art and music events, including Setouchi Triennale 2013, the MOT 20th anniversary event “FLUXUS in JAPAN” (2014), Odate & Kitaakita Arts Festival 2014, the LIQUID ROOM NYE annual countdown “HOUSE OF LIQUIDOMMUNE” (2015/2016) and the “Dada S/S 2016 Collection” event.

At the MOT exhibition “Sayoko Yamaguchi: The Wearist, Clothed in the Future,” Hatis Noit also collaborated with Ukawa Naohiro (DOMMUNE) to create a literal overnight sensation that, once the clip was released, attracted over 80,000 views within the space of a few hours. More recent collaborations or co-starring have also seen hatis team up with the likes of Matmos (U.S.), Yagya (Iceland), Keiji Haino (Japan), and Tujiko Noriko (Japan).

Every band has their own story to tell. The BSide Sessions is a new music series (under the direction of Mobtown Laboratories™) that combines our love of vinyl-era single flipsides with a desire to hear great bands premiere new songs and tell their tales in our studio. Mobtown is like a second home for us and, when making a BSide, we welcome a band into our family. They spend a day shacked up with Mat and our crew and, like savvy minstrel-spelunkers, we explore the far and intimate corners of the artists, their stories and their music. What is revealed is a distinctly intimate story narrated by song and sometimes-rowdy, sometimes-weary aftershow convo. We release all this in one 10-minute video and two songs. We hope you discover a band to love or hear some exciting new material from one you already adore.
